The ADP Story
At age 19, he took a job selling magazines door to door. That’s where he learned the difference between a conventional job and one that rewards you according to how hard you’re willing to work. Within two years, he was promoted to a supervisory position, responsible for motivating and training sales people. Two years later, he grew a sales team of 5 people to 60. Never before had someone so young, grown a team so quickly. In 1980, Nathan and his wife Ruth founded Austin Diversified Products, Inc. and developed ADVANAGE Wonder Cleaner. First they bottled it in their garage and sold it door-to-door with a crew of 10 sales people. In a short time, "Our sales people were selling it faster than we could bottle it." From the beginning, he has recruited sales people from the inner cities of America. The reason: to give thousands of young people – who lack education, direction and opportunity – a chance to break away from a life of poverty and unemployment. Twenty-eight years later, Nathan and his wife still actively run the business. Forever the salesman, Nathan spends most of his time "in the field" training, traveling with his sales crews and motivating them to succeed. |
